In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, MSF opened in November 2014, a new maternity in the district of Dasht-e-Barchi in Kabul, Afghanistan. On 25/11/14, the first babies were born there. The hospital in Dasht-e-Barchi is, with three small clinics, the only public health option the district. It is estimated that the population of this district of Kabul has increased tenfold in ten years and now exceeds one million inhabitants. Public maternity rehabilitated and supported by MSF can’t meet all the needs, but the teams will focus on the management of complicated deliveries. MSF expects to receive more than 130 complicated deliveries by month, to attend around 600 normal ones and to host as many births. MSF has worked continuously in Afghanistan since 2009. In addition to Dasht-e-Barchi, MSF also works in the Ahmad Shah Baba hospital in eastern Kabul and Boost Hospital in Lashkar Gah, Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. Finally, the organization runs a trauma center in Kunduz, providing vital surgeries to people living in the north of Afghanistan, as well as a maternity in Khost, east of the country. MSF provides free basic medical care. MSF depends solely on private funding in Afghanistan and does not accept money from any government whatsoever.
