Hoy hace 50 años que Gary Cooper, una de los actores más fascinantes de la historia del cine, moría en Los Angeles víctima de un cáncer. Tenía solo 60 años, aunque su aspecto era el de una persona algo mayor. Respetado y 
muy querido por sus compañeros de profesión y, por supuesto, por el público, Cooper logró tres Oscar de Hollywood (uno de ellos honorífico, los otros dos por ‘El Sargento York‘ y ‘Solo ante el peligro’) y cuando se fue de este mundo dejó tras de sí muchos corazones rotos, una hija y casi un centenar de películas, muchas de ellas memorables, impensables sin él.
Carole Lombard decía de él que «en cualquier conversación, cuando empieza a abrir la boca ya es el día siguiente«. Lo decía dolida, porque habían tenido una relación que no había acabado bien, sobre todo porque Lombard había descubierto con sorpresa que Cooper, en la vida real, tenía poco o nada que ver con el héroe de ‘Solo ante el peligro’. Jeffrey Meyers en la biografía ‘Gary Cooper, el héroe americano’ cuenta que Lombard lo veía cómo «un diletante, afeminado, en nada parecido al hombre de acción que solía interpretar en pantalla» y que esta disparidad entre su verdadera personalidad y su imagen ficticia, le creó a Cooper serios problemas psicológicos.
Pero al margen de lo que pensara Lombard, o Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman, Patricia Neal o cualquiera de las mujeres que lo amaron a espaldas (o a veces no tanto) de su esposa hasta la muerte, Verónica, Rocky, Balfe, Cooper fue el actor que mejor trasmitió en el cine la imagen de honradez, valentía y decisión que se le supone a todo buen héroe.
Poco antes de su muerte, sus compañeros de profesión quisieron homenajearlo en una cena en el hotel Beverly Milton. Acudió la crème de la crème y Billy Wilder ayudó a Cooper a escribir su discurso de agradecimiento, que Meyers recoge en su libro y que os trascribo. La frase inicial reescribe la que Churchill pronunció refiriéndose a la RAF en el Parlamento durante la segunda guerra mundial: «Nunca tantos han armado tanto revuelo por tan poco… Se me han otorgado muchos honores en todos estos años: las huellas de mis pies están marcadas en la entrada del Teatro Chino, mi nombre en la acera delante de Pig ‘n’ Whitle; y David Susskind dijo que era una personalidad… El único logro del que estoy orgulloso es de los amigos que he hecho en esta comunidad. Sólo al mirar esta sala me hace sentir que mi vida no ha sido inútil. Y si alguien me pregunta si creo ser el hombre más afortunado del mundo mi respuesta es ¡Sí!».

Es verdad que tenía un toque afeminado en sus rasgos, pero eso le confería una belleza fascinante. Gran actor, de esos que ya no quedan, que transmitía fuerza y a la vez distancia, logrando ser un galán a veces algo golfo. Me encanta, como gran cinéfilo, añorando las grandes películas.De esas que ya no se hacen.

Murió a los 60 años después de 38 años de carrera. Fue hijo de su tiempo y de todo lo que creia y por eso hizo peliculas que glorificaban el «sueño americano», era del Partido Republicano, conservador y defensor de lo establecido pero no denunció a ningun actor izquierdista durante la caza de brujas. Nadie le puede llamar chivato. A pesar de ser de derechas hizo aquella pelicula «¿por quien doblan las campanas? en la que ataca al régimen de Franco.
