La muerte de Luis García Berlanga me ha pillado de viaje, lejos de Internet y de un ordenador. Por eso solo he podido informarme de lo que se decía de él a través de la prensa escrita y de la televisión, pero todos han sido unánimes: se ha ido un maestro. Y a veces los periodistas utilizamos estas palabras: maestro, genio, el más grande…un poco a la ligera, como embargados por una pereza que nos hace unir determinados adjetivos con ciertos nombres que sabemos que gozan del aplauso de la crítica; pero en este caso, en el caso de Berlanga, qué cierto es.
A Berlanga, a su cine, yo llegué sin conocimiento de causa. Creo que la primera película suya que vi fue Bienvenido Mr. Marshall. Entonces era muy joven y todavía no prestaba, ni me importaba, quién estaba detrás de la cámara. Solo sabía que era una película española que me había gustado y me había hecho reír. Muchas películas después, y cuando el cine ya se había convertido en parte de mi formación académica, empecé a valorar el mérito que tenía su trabajo, y en las condiciones desfavorables en las que, muchas veces, había tenido que desarrollarlo, por lo que su mérito era aun mayor. Qué diálogos, qué personajes, qué situaciones… Berlanga estaba a la altura o superaba a cualquiera de los mejores. Después, empecé a conocer historias de gente que lo conocía o había trabajado con él y mi admiración aumentó más.
Recuerdo que un buen profesor de guión nos contó en la faculta la prueba que ponía Berlanga a quienes aspiraban a entrar en la Escuela de cine para convertirse en guionistas: pedirles que describieran de memoria las tiendas y locales que podían verse en determinado tramo de la Gran Vía de Madrid. El objetivo era comprobar si eran lo suficientemente observadores, una cualidad que Berlanga consideraba esencial para un futuro guionista. Contar esta historia en alto nos hizo cuestionarnos a todos nuestras aptitudes y nos ayudó a entender la esencia del oficio; ése que Berlanga desarrollaba con genialidad.
Hace unas semanas un periódico de prestigio tuiteó por error su muerte. Quizá estaban ansiosos por ser los primeros en dar la noticia o quizá, como dijeron, fue un simple error técnico. No creo que Berlanga, ya muy enfermo, llegara a enterarse de la ‘primicia’ sobre él. De haberlo hecho, y de haber estado Berlanga mejor, habría querido incorporar la anécdota a alguna de sus películas como colofón de alguna de sus impagables y satíricas historias. Quizá como colofón de la suya propia.
Ese Patrimonio Nacional es genial. Y cada vez que veo Todos a la cárcel me río muchísimo.
