Se disputó en Mestalla poco antes de que estallara la Guerra Civil. Eugenio y Lecue pusieron en ventaja al Madrid, pero antes del descanso Escolá recortaba distancias. Para el recuerdo quedará la parada del mítico portero blanco Ricardo Zamora a Escolá que dio el título al Madrid. Zamora se retiró tras ese partido.

Ese encuentro es recordado como «la final de las botellas» por el lanzamiento de éstas por parte del público del Bernabéu, que protestaba así por la actuación del colegiado, al que el Madrid reclamó dos penaltis. El choque se decidió con un gol en propia puerta de Zunzunegui a los cinco minutos del comienzo al intentar despejar un centro de Rifé.

El Madrid se vengó del 0-5 encajado pocos meses antes por el Barcelona que lideraba Johan Cruyff en Liga con una goleada. Por ley, en aquella final no pudieron jugar los futbolistas extranjeros.

El Barcelona se Maradona se llevó la final gracias a un cabezazo de Marcos Alonso a pocos segundos para el final. Ese partido será recordado por el corte de mangas que hizo tras el gol Schuster, que años después jugaría en el Madrid.
