tido preguntar a alguien interesado en la música si conoce a tal o cual grupo: a todo el mundo le suena casi todo, aunque sea de oídas. Otra cosa muy distinta es haberse empapado de las canciones y discos de una banda concreta. Coger un álbum y quemarlo a base de escuchas es casi un arte perdido.
Algo así me ocurría con The Dodos: su nombre me resultaba familiar, lo habiá leído en alguna parte, pero no tenía ni la más remota idea real de en qué consistía su propuesta. Un lector de este blog que responde al muy bien escogido nombre de Monkeys Go to Heaven me los recomendó a través de Facebook, y se han convertido en la banda que más he escuchado en los últimos días.
The Dodos es un dúo de San Francisco formado por Meric Long (guitarra y voz) y Logan Kroeber (batería), a los que se une puntualmente Keaton Snyder para tocar el vibráfono. Su música resulta difícil de clasificar: son minimalistas, pero extremos. Suenan acústicos, pero crean capas de sonido arrolladoras, propias de una banda mucho más numerosa. Beben del folk, pero también de propuestas tan dispares como el blues, la psicodelia o la música de los indios nativos norteamericanos. Son devotos de los ritmos contundentes (en ocasiones, casi hipnóticos), las guitarras veloces y las melodías impredecibles, a las que en ocasiones acuden de manera cercana al pop. Ninguno de ellos es un virtuoso y, sin embargo, saben darle a sus instrumentos vueltas de tuerca nada convencionales. Quizá por ello se les meta en ese cajón de sastre denominado «música experimental» e incluso en un término aún más pillado por los pelos, el freak folk, que incluye a propuestas tan distintas como Akron/Familly, Sufjan Stevens o Animall Collective.
Jody es uno de los cortes que forman parte de su segundo álbum, el muy recomendable Visiter, publicado en 2008. Y precisamente, el tema que me recomendó este amable lector y que me ha servido para conocer (y no sólo de oídas) a una banda única en su especie.
Ojo con la música del banner. Si se os entremezcla con la del vídeo el resultado sí que será experimental.
