El gallego Luis Suárez, hasta ahora único Balón de Oro en la historia del fútbol español (1960), habla en una entrevista en el diario as sobre el galardón que se entrega mañana en Zúrich y para el que están nominados tres jugadores del Barcelona: Iniesta, Xavi y Messi. Para el bicampeón de Europa con el Inter de Milán, el Balón de Oro debería ser para Xavi como premio a su regularidad.

¿Por qué han tenido que pasar 50 años para que lo gane otro ‘nacido en España’?
Tuvieron mala suerte de encontrarse con gente como Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Van Basten Gente muy espectacular. Raúl estuvo cerca. Y yo ahora digo: estos chicos que han ganado Eurocopa y Mundial aún no se dan cuenta de lo que han hecho. ¡Es impresionante! El fútbol español se merece tener otro Balón de Oro…
¿Su preferido era Xavi?Sí… El Balón de Oro no discute quién es mejor, porque entonces seguramente Messi es mejor futbolista que los otros dos. Se discute quién fue más regular, y lo fue Xavi.
¿E Iniesta?Tiene un juego más vertical que Xavi, y hace cosas en los últimos metros, una zona tan difícil, muy importantes. Hace cosas que llegan a la gente. El juego de Xavi se parece más al mío, sin ser igual, en el sentido de que hace las cosas fáciles. Eso llega menos. Y dígame cuánta gente hace lo que Xavi. ¡Nadie! Si no sale Xavi, pagará que lo que hace parece fácil.
¿Es más difícil ganarlo ahora que en su época?Es igual, pero antes para salir en la tele tenías que llegar a la final de la Copa de Europa. De otra manera, no te veía ni el apuntador…
A la hora de asignar balones de oro algo no funciona bien cuando en España solo Luis Suárez lo ha conseguido. Hay algo que chirría. Cierto que como dice Suárez ha habido grandes jugadores en el mundo jugando en Europa, pero así. Suárez no ha querido juzgar en esta entrevista todo el tinglado del nombramiento de balón de oro.
