Hola Javier,
Disculpe por escribir en ingles, mi espanol es muy mal.
Sorry for writing in english, but my spanish is just too bad. But if it´s easier for you to answer in Spanish it´s okay for me, I understand quite a bit.
I´am supporting a telemetry project of Dr. E. Gottschalk at the University of Göttingen / Lower Saxony / Germany and help to locate Red Kites that are equipped with transmitters.
The reason for my email are the following observations:
In the vicinity of the village of Seeburg in Southern Lower Saxony, Germany (coordinates: 51°33´57.80´´ N; 10°09´19.60´´) in a group of Red Kites we noticed one with a transmitter. This was on 2nd of July 2020. Our E-OBS receiver surprisingly didn´t get a signal. In addition to that we could take several pictures (which are not really good) but when talking to Dr. Gottschalk he confirmed that this was not the type of transmitter he used.
Dr. Martin Kolbe from the Red Kite Center in Halberstadt assumed that this transmitter type is not used in Germany and most of the neighboring countries, with the possible exception of Poland. By doing some research on the web and contacting the Polish manufacturer Ecotone, we learned that the transmitter was probably an Ecotone KITE-H GPS-GSM-UHF, with remote data download via SMS, GPRS and long range UHF.
During the last two weeks we had several more observations of this Kite in the same location as last year and now we are pretty sure we found the nest where it belongs to. The nest is occoupied by a Red Kite – presumably the female – and the one with the transmitter flying overhead or in the vicinity, which makes us believe it is the male belonging to this nest.
Now our question is if you know who may have equipped the kite with the transmitter. Of course we are interested in learning about the origin of the Kite for it must be outside of Germany which means a long range distribution.
In addition to that I need to tell that the actual summer home range of this Kite is quite close to several windfarms. Only a few kilometers apart from the nesting site two Kites had been killed by windrotors in the last week of April this year, two other ones had been killed in previous years at the same location.
For these reasons we would greatly appreciate any help concerning the questions:
Where has this Kite been equipped with the transmitter, and
Which are the movements in the summer range.
Thanks a lot for your comprehension and help.
Sincerely
Wilhelm
